WHAT IS LEGAL PSYCHOLOGY?

Legal Psychology is an area in the psycho-legal domain that focuses on the application of psychological principles in legal contexts. Through research, empirically supported evidence is used to inform policy (re)formulation, and improve the utility of research-led practice by legal professionals. In the field, topics of focus include, but are not limited to: child sexual abuse (CSA), memory, legal decision-making, human intelligence gathering in counter-terrorism contexts, investigative interviewing/interrogation methods, eye-witness testimony, deception detection, criminal responsibility and trial consultation.
TAMEKA ROMEO, PhD, MSc, BSc, IP

Dr Tameka Romeo is a Legal Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist and Informed Practitioner in Investigative Psychology. Tameka received a Joint Doctorate in Legal Psychology from Maastricht University in The Netherlands and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. The findings from her studies have been presented at multiple international conferences in The Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Czech Republic, and Jamaica. In 2019, she received the award for Best Paper for 2019 in the Journal of Memory & Cognition by the Psychonomic Society. An alumna of The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, she read for the degree of Master of Science in Clinical Psychology (distinction).
Committed to bridging the research-practice gap as it pertains to the law and psychology, Tameka has participated and volunteered in various restorative justice projects in the Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) Prison Service. Her research interests include memory in child sexual abuse victims, memory in child-oriented sexual offenders (paedophiles), decision-making in legal professionals, gender-based violence, sexual assault homicides, and psychopathy. Since 2016, Tameka has worked to remedy the psychological and social impact of violent crime on the individual and collaborative psyche of citizens in T&T, through her NGO, Mothers of the Missing and Murdered (M.O.M.M).
